First, the thing everyone wonders
North Lake takes its name from the lake — known by that name since 1877, with the name approved for the suburb in 1954 — and it is the obvious thing to ask about when the subject is water.
It is not your water supply. Your tap water is scheme water, treated and delivered the same way it is everywhere else on this side of the river, and the lake has nothing to do with what comes out of the kitchen mixer. Whatever you are tasting, it is not the lake.
What it is, most of the time, is chlorine. Water Corporation adds chlorine to all of its water supply schemes as a disinfectant, and says it is especially effective where long pipelines and high water temperatures increase the potential for harmful organisms to grow. It does its job and it has a taste — and that taste is what nearly every domestic filter is fitted to deal with.
The other half of the story is that Perth water is not drawn from one place. Water Corporation supplies more than 1.2 million properties from 43 surface water sources, 92 groundwater sources, two major desalination plants and one groundwater replenishment scheme, so the blend shifts and the tap shifts with it. A filter holds it steady instead of waiting for it to come good.
The North Lake job
This is a small suburb of detached houses with room around them, and that is about as good as it gets for a whole-house install.
The unit goes where the water comes into the property, near the meter, because everything upstream of the filter is unfiltered. A house on its own block with side access gives the plumber somewhere to mount housings with clearance underneath, somewhere protected from full sun, and somewhere a person can actually reach at service time.
