Why we ask where you are
It is not the same job everywhere, and the answer to "what should I put in" moves with the house.
Kardinya and the suburbs built alongside it
are detached-housing country. A house on its own block has its own water meter at the front boundary and usually side access down a boundary, which is the arrangement a whole-house filter wants. It also has a kitchen cupboard to put an under-sink unit in and a benchtop you are allowed to drill. That combination is what makes this the easy version of the job.
The older suburbs
have had more hands on them. A kitchen that has been renovated twice since the house was built has a mix of fittings from different eras under the sink, and the isolation on the cold feed is not always where you would hope. None of that stops the work — it just means a plumber looks before quoting rather than after, which is why the visit is free.
Where the kitchens are newer
, the benchtop is more often stone. That changes one specific thing: drilling for a dedicated filtered tap becomes a slower, more careful job than it is on laminate, and it belongs on the written price rather than turning up on the day. More on filtered tap installation
Units and apartments
are a different conversation again. A whole-house filter needs a point where the water enters the property that you are entitled to work on, and in a strata building that is usually not yours. Under-sink is normally the practical answer there. Tell us what you are in when you ring.
The water is the same
One thing that does not change from suburb to suburb: Water Corporation adds chlorine to all of its water supply schemes as a disinfectant, and says it is especially effective where long pipelines and high water temperatures increase the potential for harmful organisms to grow.
Nor is Perth water drawn from one place.
